Sao Paulo opens 5 points at the top

In an extremely exciting match, Sao Paulo beat Parana 3-2 on Thursday at the Morumbi Stadium to open 5 points at the top of the standings in the Brazilian Serie A. The leaders now have 37 points against 32 from second place Santos. And Sao Paulo still has one game in hand, as do Internacional and Parana, in third place with 31 points.

The match started in frantic fashion, and Parana quickly showed it had no intention of sitting back to wait for the locals. After just 5 minutes, the visitors opened the score with Beto, who controlled the ball inside the penalty box after a corner kick, and placed it past goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni. One minute later, however, Sao Paulo tied with Aloisio, on a header after a free kick from the right. Parana continued to pressure and soon started controlling most of the action, limiting Sao Paulo to just a few passes around but never inside its penalty box. At the 22nd minute, Leonardo took advantage of a melee near Sao Paulo's goal to put the visitors up ahead again.

The teams still traded chances in the first half, but nobody could score. Sao Paulo would only manage to tie the game in the second half, after coach Muricy Ramalho changed a couple of players to try to create more chances. Leandro equalized at the 68th minute. Parana still had a few chances to win the game, but Alex Silva gave the hosts their first and final lead of the game after trying two headers to put the ball past the opposition's defense and into the net.

With the win Sao Paulo finishes the first half of the league in first place, and can build up to an eight point lead after making up its postponed match with Atletico Paranaense, originally scheduled for last week but which not took place due to the Libertadores final against Internacional. Inter and Parana, which should have played too, will also make up their game on September 30.

In another match yesterday, Gremio beat Fortaleza 4-1 to reach fifth place in the league alongside Fluminense and Vasco, with 29 points. The locals lead 3-0 after only 36 minutes, and slowing down afterwards. Fortaleza scored with 10 minutes left in the second half, but Gremio would still score another goal in injury time. It was the second of three home games in which the team from Rio Grande do Sul will play with no fans allowed in the stands. In the previous match in which the penalty was applied, the team had beaten Atletico Paranaense.

Vasco showed its win over Santos was no accident and beat Figueirense 3-1 at home and also reach fifth place. The home team quickly opened the score after 11 minutes, but suffered the tying goal 20 minutes later. Vasco would only pull ahead in the second half, with goals at the 68th and 88th minutes.
