Sao Paulo only draws with Fortaleza at home

Sao Paulo missed a great chance to open a 6-point lead at the top of the table in the Brazilian League, only drawing Fortaleza 1-1 at home yesterday night at the Morumbi Stadium. With the result, the team is now four points ahead of second placed Gremio and Santos, with one game in hand.

Despite the draw, Sao Paulo created several chances to score at the start of the game, but could not turn into these opportunities into goals. Slowly, goalkeeper Alberico started making key saves to become the man of the match. Sao Paulo's goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni still put a ball to the post in a free kick, and the first half ended in a scoreless draw. In the second half, Sao Paulo created a few good chances at the beginning, but the visitors quickly started pushing forward. Then, the unthinkable happened at the 86th minute, when Rinaldo scored for Fortaleza. The locals managed to get the draw one minute later with Lenilson, and looked like they could win when they got a penalty kick in injury time. It wasn't Rogerio Ceni's night though, but rather Alberico's. The visiting goalkeeper guessed correctly and saved the kick by Ceni, sealing the fate of the match and showing the league leaders that they still have to play seriously if they want to remain on course to a fourth national title. Happy with the draw, Fortaleza still complained - and correctly so - that they should have been given a penalty kick in the second half. But if nothing else, the draw was a fairer result.

At the Sao Januario Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Vasco didn't quite show it missed its five regular players at the match against Ponte Preta. Still, it had to settle to a 2-2 draw and a missed opportunity to reach Gremio and Santos in the standings. Playing better in the first half, the locals fell behind on a goal by Tuto, and had a goal called off for an offside that replays showed had not happened. They also complained about a penalty kick that should had been given. Another penalty happened at the start of the second half, but this time it was awarded. Faioli scored the tying goal for the locals, but Ponte Preta quickly scored its second one minute later, again with Tuto. Fabio Junior gave the final numbers to the game, and Vasco still created a few more chances before the end of the match, but to no avail.

Finally, Botafogo extended its winning streak to three games with a superb 4-0 win over Parana, now running a three-game losing streak. Lima scored twice in the span of two minutes in the first half, with Reinaldo and Ze Roberto scoring in the second half. Parana's luck in the table seems to have definitely shifted, with the team once fighting for the lead now out of the top five in the standings.
